MIST 2013 Workshops

Saturday, March 9, 2013: 3:00pm-4:00pm

Workshop 1: Humans – The Sum of their Habits?
Sr. Hafsa Taher (Productive Muslim)

Shaquille O’Neil once said: “Excellence is not a singular act, but a habit. You are what you do repeatedly.” To what extent do our habits determine who were are and what our future will be? Maintaining patience in developing the habits that can “make” us and steering clear of the ones that can “break” us is a key factor in determining our future success..

Saturday, March 9, 2013: 7:00pm-8:00pm

Workshop 2A: He Shoots, He Scores! (Brothers Only)
Br. Majied Ali (Islamic Soccer League)

Regarded as one of the best players of all time, Brazilian footballer Pelé once said: “Success is no accident.  It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do.” Patiently applying this advice both on and off the field is vital in helping us achieve our goals.  Even if you’re not an athlete, this brothers-only session is an opportunity to discuss issues and ask questions about sports, school, and life in general. Note: A drop box for anonymous questions will be made available prior to the workshop and presented to the speaker to address during the session.

Workshop 2B: Patience and Perseverance: A Prophetic Guide (Sisters Only)
Dr. Bano Murtuja (SeekersHub)

Olympic athlete Donna de Varona said: “The values learned on the playing field – how to set goals, endure, take criticism and risk, become team players, use our beliefs, stay healthy, and deal with stress – prepare us for life.” The life of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) is filled with stories of tests and trials, whereby these qualities were perfected.  These examples offer us insight into the benefits of not only passively enduring, but being active in our patient endeavour for truth and goodness.  Note: A drop box for anonymous questions will be made available prior to the workshop and presented to the speaker to address during the session.

Sunday, March 10, 2013: 11:00am-12:00pm

Workshop 3: Patience – The Building Blocks of Identity
Br. Khaiam Dar (Chaplaincy Program at University of Toronto)

Boxer, Muhammad Ali said: “Champions aren’t made in the gyms. Champions are made from something they had deep inside them: A desire, a dream, a vision.” A large part of implementing that vision is having the patience to do so.  However, is the capacity for patience and the ability to exercise it truly a part of our personal or collective reality? Does it permeate our lives and our faith to the extent that it should, and if so, at what levels?

Sunday, March 10, 2013: 6:00pm-7:00pm

Workshop 4: The Keys to Happiness and Success: Passion, Achievement, and Self-Control
Omar Khaled and Lobna El-Gamal (CivicMuslims)

Canadian track athlete, Ian Warner said: “We all lose sight sometimes, but when we find our way again we are not only 2x stronger but we can see where we need to be, where we should be, and most importantly we understand why we are not there already.” Searching for your personal passion and goals? Already found them?  Struggling to achieve your goals and aspirations? Whatever your answers may be, we want to help you understand how it works, why it matters, and what you can do to get better.  In our personal journeys from a state we are currently in towards one that is better, lie opportunities to grow, learn and develop. Find out how you can make your own journey more fruitful through self-awareness and reflection.
