Scoring

MIST is made up of individual and team competitions. Points scored in individual competitions are added to both the competitor’s individual score as well as the Overall Team score.

Some examples of individual competitions are: 2D Art, 3D Art, Photography, all “Knowledge & Quran” competitions, Debate, etc.Team competitions are those in which more than one competitor may collaborate on a single entry as part of a Competition Team. In these competitions, all individuals competing in the Competition Team will have their Competition Team’s score added to their individual score. However, what is added to the Overall Team score are the points associated with the Competition Team’s place. For example, if you have a 3-person MIST Bowl team win 1st Place, all three people will see their score go up by 10 points towards their Overall Individual score, and the team’s score will go up by 10 points towards their Overall Team score. Some examples of team competitions include: Islamic Website Design, Islamic Scholastic Bowl, all “Group Projects” competitions, etc.

SPORTS

The purpose of basketball and soccer competitions are for team building. These competitions do NOT count towards points. However, awards will be presented to the winning teams.<

For certain competitions such as basketball only the top three will advance to MIST Nationals.  A complete list of qualifying competitors will be posted on the MIST Toronto website shortly after the tournament.

INSIDER’S EDGE – MAKING THE MOST OF MIST

Visibility

Show up to each of your competitions! You’ll lose 100% of the competitions that you don’t show up for.

Every little bit counts! The margin of victory between 2nd and 3rd place in 2010 was 6 points and between 4th and 5th was 7 points. In 2010, 5 points were deducted from the team score for every missed competition.

Diversity

Enter members of your team in as many competitions as possible. The maximum number of competitions that any one competitor can enter in is six (one per category + basketball or soccer).

In 2010, the teams that placed 1st, 2nd, and 3rd entered their members into 100%, 80%, and 97% of  competitions.

Create, Critique, Correct

Don’t simply create your submissions and bring them to MIST. Have them critiqued by your coach, teammates, parents, teachers…etc. Listen to their criticism and head back to the drawing board to make improvements. Each time you do this your submission will get better, insha’Allah!

Have a Mini-MIST competition at your school. Not only is this a great way to create some friendly intra-team competition, it also gets your team MISTified! For larger teams, this is a great way of selecting who will ultimately compete at MIST if you have multiple people interested in the same competition. After all, you want to be fair and make sure your school is represented by the best!
