Fundraising Tips for your School

If you are having trouble fundraising for your trip to MIST, here are some tips that may help:

1.       Ask your school administrators for help

Most schools have a budget that is allocated for student clubs and initiatives. Put together a concise, well-written speech about MIST about why you deserve financial help. Speak to administrators who you think would be willing to help (principal, vice-principal). Try speaking to your guidance counsellor, who may give your team some support. Try to get a few teachers on board.

2.       Plan an in-school fundraising event

Some ideas include:

  • Organize a bake sale, selling cookies, cupcakes, and other sweet treats.
  • Plan a talent show that showcases the talents of your MIST team.
  • Have an in-school car wash and offer to clean vehicles at a reasonable price.
  • Sell candy grams with kind messages to your friends.
  • Arrange a basketball or ball hockey tournament and charge an admission price.

You can also approach local businesses to sponsor any of your fundraising events. When advertising, make sure to include the business’ name to show your thanks for their sponsorship.

3.       Email local politicians

Local politicians often have an allocated budget to support community initiatives. Write professional letters and email your local representatives (counsellor, MPs, and MPPs). If they do not directly help you, ask them to guide you to someone who can help you.

4.       Ask community service organizations for support

Reach out to local youth groups and community organizations with a letter. They will provide you with support either with direction in terms of who to contact or directly provide you with financial help.

5.       Speak to local masjids and businesses

Send letters and speak with community businesses and masjids. Provide them with information about MIST, why they should help you, and what you would like for them to provide for you. Perhaps they could sponsor your team’s t-shirts or bus fare? You could also ask if they could provide support for students who find it difficult to pay.
